Reimbursement or international health insurance? Specialist report and physiotherapy prescription in Málaga
«My insurer reimburses physiotherapy, but they want a specialist's prescription». «I have an international policy and I don't know which documents I need». «I started my sessions and now they say the prescription was missing». If any of these sounds like you, this page is for you.
With a reimbursement policy you pay first and your insurer pays you back a share, but only if the paperwork is right and on time. At my consultation I examine you, use musculoskeletal ultrasound where it adds information and, if physiotherapy is indicated, prescribe it the same day: you leave with the report, the prescription and the invoice your insurer checks. I consult inside several physiotherapy clinics in Málaga and on the Costa del Sol, so it can be at the same place where you will be treated. The whole consultation can be in English.

Who this consultation is for
- You have an international health insurance policy, as many foreign residents on the Costa del Sol do, and you need a report and an invoice with the details your insurer asks for.
- You have a Spanish reimbursement policy and want to use it for physiotherapy, with the specialist's prescription it requires.
- You've been told you need a prescription and don't know who can sign it or what it must include. It is explained in the guide on the physiotherapy prescription for your insurance claim.
- You've already started sessions without a prescription and want to fix it as soon as possible.
- You already have a physiotherapist, in Málaga or anywhere else, and you only need a specialist's prescription and report: it can be done by online consultation when your case can be assessed by video call.
What you take away
- Medical report with the examination, the ultrasound findings and the diagnosis, including its ICD-10 code.
- Physiotherapy prescription, if indicated: goal, number of sessions, frequency and when to review. Dated, signed, with my registration number and specialty.
- Invoice for the consultation, to submit together with the physiotherapy invoices.
- Your plan: what to do in the meantime, exercises where appropriate and, when needed, medical treatment at the same visit.
How I work with your physiotherapist
Physiotherapist and rehabilitation doctor bring different things to the same process, and each decides within their own field. I provide the medical diagnosis and the prescription your insurer requires; your physiotherapist plans and adjusts the treatment session by session. Because I consult inside physiotherapy clinics, we often talk directly; when we don't, the report is the bridge between us. At the end of each block of sessions we review how you have progressed and whether the prescription needs renewing. More in working with physiotherapists and in how many sessions insurance covers.
What I don't do, so there are no surprises
- Automatic prescriptions. In person, the prescription comes from the examination; by video call, only when the assessment and the documents you provide allow me to prescribe. If they don't, I tell you.
- Back-dated prescriptions to cover sessions already done. I can prescribe the remaining ones, with the real date.
- A number of sessions decided by the policy or by what you have already bought. I prescribe what is indicated, in blocks, with a review.
Where I consult
I consult at several clinics in Málaga and on the Costa del Sol: Málaga city, Torremolinos, Fuengirola, Rincón de la Victoria and Alhaurín de la Torre. In clinics & phone numbers you have the addresses and opening hours, and you can book directly on Doctoralia. If you are going to be treated at one of these clinics, book your appointment with me there.
Frequently asked questions
Are you a network provider for my insurance company?
No. At the clinics where I consult I see patients privately: you pay for the consultation and, if your policy reimburses out-of-network care, your insurer pays you back the share your contract sets. If your policy only covers network providers, this route won't work for you, and I'd rather you know before booking.
What exactly do I take away for my claim?
A medical report with the examination, the ultrasound findings and the diagnosis, including its ICD-10 code; a physiotherapy prescription with the goal, the number of sessions and the frequency, signed with my registration number and specialty; and the invoice for the consultation. These are the items insurers check.
Do I need to see you before physiotherapy starts?
Yes, that is what avoids problems: the prescription must be dated before the first session, and many policies require pre-authorisation or a guarantee of payment. If you have already started, come as soon as you can: I can prescribe the remaining sessions with the real date of the visit.
Can this be done by video call?
It depends on where you will have your physiotherapy and on your case. If you are going to be treated at one of the clinics where I consult, come in person: I examine you, use ultrasound and you leave with everything the same day. If you already have a physiotherapist elsewhere, or you live far away, and you only need a specialist's prescription, you can book the online consultation: if the video call and your reports or scans allow me to assess you and prescribe, I email you the report with the prescription and the invoice. If they don't, I tell you and we look at the in-person route. It is never automatic, and the report states that the assessment was done by video consultation.
Is the consultation in English?
Yes, the whole consultation can be in English. The report includes the diagnosis with its international ICD-10 code, which insurers read in any language.
How much does the consultation cost?
It depends on the clinic where we meet and on whether any procedure is performed. The clinic confirms it when you book, before anything is done. The invoice you take away is the one you submit with the report and the prescription.
Percentages, caps and deadlines are those of your policy. This page explains how the consultation works; it does not replace your policy terms.
